I love searching the net looking for home remedies that people use to combat the daily ailments that we humans are prone to get. One of my favorites is a home remedy for cold sores. Some of these remedies sound a bit whacky and I can’t vouch that they work as I have not tried them. I just find these remedies interesting and entertaining and I hope you do to. You may even want to try one.
Home Remedy for Cold Sore:
Nail Polish Remover – using a Q-tip apply nail polish remover to your cold sore
Ear wax – at the onset of a cold sore apply ear wax. (Authors note – use your own ear wax.
Tea Bag – apply a warm tea bag to your cold sore.
Ice or a Popsicle – when a cold sore is just beginning apply ice or a popsicle to the infected area for as long as you can stand it.
Witch Hazel – applying witch hazel to a cold sore will relieve the soreness
After Shave – apply aftershave to the cold sore a few times a day to dry it out
L-lysine – take L-lysine (which can be found in the vitamin section of your drugstore) 3 times a day to get rid of the cold sore.
Garlic – when you first feel a cold sore coming on dab a clove of garlic on it for about 10 minutes.
As you can see there are many different home remedies for cold sores. Above are only just a few that I have found. If you have a cold sore and you are trying to get rid of it you may want to try one of the above methods.

I have a huge coldsore on my bottom lip, does anyone know of any remedies? Abreva is way too expensive! Are there any Inexpensive ColdSore Remedies out there?

For mine alcohol on it until it scabs over and then I use a constant coating of Neosporin because I consider it a wound at that point. I agree with you that abreva is too expensive and I don’t believe that it really works – not for me anyway. If you get these often, get a prescription from your doctor. Makes them go away really fast. Also as Inexpensive ColdSore Remedies you can try Vinegar. It kills the bacteria. Also a dab of honey will make it better. Camphophenique Burns but it works, and a lot less expensive than some ‘brand name specialty salve. ColdSores naturally caused by a ‘pre-existing virus: “HERPES SIMPLEX- B” (it sounds ‘icky’ yet more of us than NOT- do have it. just so you don’t feel bad)
Tea Tree Oil is also one of the good inexpensive coldsore remedies. You can find it at any drug store in your area. There are also Canker sores that many people confuse with cold sores: Canker sores are small, shallow lesions that develop on the soft tissues in your mouth — under your tongue, inside your cheeks or lips, and at the base of your gums. Unlike cold sores, canker sores don’t occur on the surface of your lips and aren’t contagious. They can be very painful, however, and can make eating and talking difficult.
Most canker sores go away on their own in a week or two. Check with your doctor or dentist if you have unusually large or painful canker sores or canker sores that don’t seem to heal. Apply sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) to the lips to prevent recurrences. Don’t touch the blisters. This can spread the virus, as can sharing personal items such as towels, razors, drinking glasses, or toothbrushes
For treatment remedies and options you should also try meditation, yoga, or other forms of relaxation to reduce stress, which is thought to precipitate cold sores. Stay away from nuts, chocolate, whole-grain cereals, and gelatin. They contain a large amount of the amino acid arginine, which some doctors think triggers cold sores. Lysine may counteract its effect.
